How to carry out sampling from the kidney for bacteriology

In this video, you will learn how to perform kidney sampling for bacteriological examinations, as well as how to perform a primary cultivation. Use sterile technique when extracting the sample to avoid contamination between samples from different fish. This method is well suited for bacteria related to sepsis, e.g. Yersinia ruckeri, Pasteurella atlantica.

Step by step

  1. Use a sterile scalpel blade or a flamed wire loop to "puncture" the kidney
  2. Insert sterile loop in the head kidney to gather inoculate and avoid contact with other surfaces
  3. Perform primary cultivation on the appropriate agar as directed on the film
